Leona to star in musical?

British pop star Leona Lewis is in talks to take on the lead role of Maria in Broadway hit West Side Story, when it returns to the New York stage for its 50th Anniversary next year.

Lewis, who is currently riding high in the U.K. pop charts with her debut single Bleeding Love, has been approached by singer/actor David Winters - who played A-Rab in the original 1961 stage and movie productions - about starring in the musical.

Winter is hopeful the singer will agree to join his upcoming Broadway Spectacular reprisal of West Side Story, scheduled to open towards the end of 2008.

A source tells WENN, “This is a really exciting opportunity for Leona. She’s got the voice and she can act.”

Leona will reunite with her childhood vocal coach Janet Edwards to train for the part if negotiations are successful.

If shes this good at singing now, amagine what she will be like after getting professional vocal coaching!
